The exhibition introduced the viewers to the ancient Chinese written culture through books, calligraphy, posters, and map facsimiles produced in the period in which the development of print technology made the knowledge available to a wider audience.
The exhibition also presented a challenge: to exhibit 52 book reproductions, all of which were visually similar and their content – in Chinese. Our solution was to turn the viewing process itself into an adventure. Inspired by the ancient Chinese puzzles, we designed metal stands with movable wooden planes that the books were fixed on. Visitors could browse through the reproductions and discover the story behind the particular book by sliding the planes.
The exhibition stand design was awarded the “Latvian Design Union Award 2016” and “Latvian Design Award 2017”.
