In “Rēgi” (“Ghosts”), a series of nine stories, a fictitious narrator gives a subjective account of her life that is hidden from everybody else’s eyes. With its simplicity, the design of the collection of stories frames the luxurious and detailed illustrations by Līva Pakalne-Fanelli that generously fill the volume, becoming a significant part of the book. The seriousness of this frame is countered by the size of the book: it easily fits in your hands like something small and sweet. Although aimed at an adult audience, the volume is designed like a fairytale book where the text, alongside the nine central illustrations, is interspersed with illustrative details that invite you to stop, linger, take a close look at the image and turn over the words you have just read in your mind. Three different elements are intertwined in the book: the stories, the illustrations and hand-written insertions. If the images are dreamlike, the handwriting calls the reader back to reality: it is simple and genuine.
