Together with the Pauls Stradiņš Medicine History Museum (MHM) we are developing the idea of a specially for children created museum space, focusing on body, health conditions and illnesses taking into account the “One Health” principle which sees human, animal and environmental health as inextricably linked.
We start by looking for points of contact between the museum’s collections and children’s experiences – how can a medical history museum be useful for 7–11 year olds? In a campaign with the Medical History Museum and the White Label Agency, we are collecting children’s questions about health, illness and the body.
In cooperation with the MVM and the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden, we are creating a small scale exhibition prototype. Together with children, the project will create an educational tool – a mini collection in a box – which will travel around Latvian schools for several months and give children the opportunity to model their own mini–museum. This educational tool will allow children to discuss and learn about topics related to health, inclusion and caring for ourselves, each other and the world around us in an engaging and collaborative format, thus promoting health literacy and empathy in children, as well as developing creative and critical thinking.
